HE THAT WINNETH SOULS IS WISE

-The very first thing that God spoke directly to mankind: Genesis 1:28: “And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

-We’re made to be fruitful, physically

-One of last things that God/Jesus spoke directly to Christians: Mark 16:15-16: “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.”

-We Christians are made/remade to be fruitful, spiritually

-So basically the first and last things that God directly spoke from his mouth to us was to be fruitful; to be fruitful physically, and to be fruitful spiritually

-Being fruitful, physically, means reproducing your same kind

-Being fruitful, spiritually, means reproducing other Christians; soul-winning; Proverbs 11:30: “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.”

-Why soul-win? We’re created/recreated to be fruitful. Jesus commanded us to soul-win, and because the danger of hell is real. Jesus said that most people are going to hell; Matthew 7:13-14: “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

-Hell is being tormented by fire forever; Luke 16:22-24: “And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; and in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.” + Revelation 14:10-11: “The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: and the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night …”

-God is not willing that any should perish; 2 Peter 3:9: “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” + Matthew 18:11: “For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.” And we should have this same attitude of self-sacrifice in order to save and serve the brethren; Matthew 20:26-28: “But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; and whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

-Immediate rewards for soul-winning; John 4:25-34: ” The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. 26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he. 27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her? 28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, 29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ? 30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him. 31 In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat. 32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of. 33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat? 34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.” There is great satisfaction in doing God’s work of soul-winning. God is joyful when even one person gets saved (Luke 15:10: “Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.”), and we get to share in that joy when someone gets saved through us.

-There are eternal rewards for soul-winning; Daniel 12:1-3: “And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. 2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.”

-Eternal rewards for soul-winning described more directly in 1 Corinthians 3; context is receiving rewards for soul-winning, and for teaching/growing Christians; 1 Co 3:5-8: “5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? 6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. 8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.” Works that Christians do for the Lord will get us eternal rewards in heaven. Other works won’t get us rewards in heaven (therefore each Christian has varying degrees of rewards in heaven, depending up his works); 1 Co 3:13-15: “13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. 14 If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15 If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.”

-What wins souls? The direct word of God, in particular, the gospel; Romans 10:17: “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (hearing = understanding; Jn 8:43 + Mt 11:15) + 1 Peter 1:23: “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.” + Romans 1:16: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
