Reprobate Silver Shall Men Call Them

Main Verse: Jeremiah 6:30

Companion Verse: Romans 1:21-32

And the reason I want to look at Romans is to create a correlation in your minds between the words that are used in Romans to describe reprobates and the use of the same word in Jeremiah.

The word reprobate is actually used in the Bible only 7 times.

The first time ever – and in fact the only time – that the word Reprobate is used in the Old Testament is Jeremiah 6:30.

The very next time that we encounter the word reprobate is its first appearance in the NT, which is in Romans 1:28.

So there’s a definite link … the first time that the word reprobate appears in the Bible, and the first time that the word reprobate appears in the NT.

The other instances where the word reprobate is used is:

  • 2 Corinthians chapter 13 (where it’s used 3 times in 3 consecutive verses), so it’s really the same usage of the word.

  • The next time it’s used is in 2 Timothy 3:8

  • And finally, in Titus 1:16.

And so when you consider the usage in Corinthians, the word reprobate only appears in 5 unique instances in the Bible.

So because of its scarcity, it’s like God wants to make sure that there’s no confusion about its meaning.

The word is never used in multiple ways or with multiple meanings.

It always means the same thing in the Bible.

And today, we’re going to do a short word study and determine exactly what the word reprobate means according to the Bible.

The question that I want to answer is:

What is a Reprobate?

And Can a Reprobate be Saved?

  • While you’re turning to … Read Romans 1

  • Turn to Jeremiah 6:30

  • What is reprobate silver?

Isaiah 1:22 says:

Thy silver is become dross, thy wine mixed with water:

Reprobate silver is silver with so much dross in it (dross is impurities in precious metals) that it becomes worthless as a precious metal.

It’s something that at one point had value …

But reprobate silver, silver that’s impure, silver that has dross in it, no matter how much you put to the refiner’s fire, it’s not going to get purified.

In Jeremiah, the Israelites had become so utterly corrupt that trying to shape them and purify them through fire had become impossible.

Ezekiel 22:18:

Son of man, the house of Israel is to me become dross: all they are brass, and tin, and iron, and lead, in the midst of the furnace; they are even the dross of silver.

A reprobate then is someone that God has given up on trying to turn into something of value.

They’ve become silver full of dross, fit only to be discarded and rejected.

Back Up to V. 28-29

Founder: Caster of Metals.

What is a bellow? A bellow is an instrument that a metalsmith uses to blow fire.

Psalm 119:119: Thou puttest away all the wicked of the earth like dross: therefore I love thy testimonies.

By contrast, God’s people those who are redeemed by God and are saved, the Bible says in:

Malachi 3:3:

And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.

1 Peter 1:7

That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

So on the hand you have the redeemed, people who were once in sin, but able to be saved, and on the other hand, you have people who have rejected God repeatedly and hardened their hearts so that they will no longer hear and God has given them over to a reprobate mind.

So even if God were to throw a reprobate into the furnace a thousand times, it would not profit anything!

So looking back at the language of Jeremiah 6, v. 28:

They are all grievous revolters, walking with slanders: they are brass and iron; they are all corrupters.

This is similar to the verses in Romans 1. The same type of language is used, further strengthening the case that these are parallel passages.

In Romans they are called, backbiters, haters of God in v. 30

Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful.

The way that these lists read, you could almost blend them together and think they’re the same verse.

Through these passages, a continuity is created in the believer’s mind between the reprobates of Jeremiah’s generation in Israel and the reprobates of today change the natural use into that which is against nature.

Back up to verse 10 in Jeremiah chapter 6.

It says their ear is “uncircumcised”.

·       To be uncircumcised spiritually, is to be cut off from God.

Acts 7:51 says:

Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.

  • People with uncircumcised ears, can’t hear God!

Jesus said in Matthew 13:13-15:

13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.

14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:

15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and [their] ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with [their] eyes, and hear with [their] ears, and should understand with [their] heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

John 12:40

He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with [their] eyes, nor understand with [their] heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

This passage in John 12:40 is about reprobates.

·       There comes a point when you can reject God so often after He has reached out to you with His Holy Spirit and given you the invitation over and over again, that God will reject you and harden your heart!

Pharaoh witnessed great miracles done by Moses. If anyone should have believed, if any one had no excuse, it was Pharaoh …

Going back to Jeremiah 6:15 – unashamed and could not blush.

Think of all the “Gay” Pride parades & the boastful promotion of the homos by our own government …

Romans 1 says they are “proud”, “boasters”.

For the first time ever … our government under John Kerry has appointed a special Envoy for the “Human Rights of the LGBT persons”.

So they get this pervert named Randy Berry as the special envoy …

John Kerry, Secretary of State of SodoMerica said in a statement that Randy Berry’s job will be to “reaffirm the universal human rights of all persons, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.”

Kerry has a history of being a sodomite sympathizer, which the Bible says in Romans 1:32

“Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.”

The US Dept. of State also launched a tax-funded organization in 2011 called the Global Equality Fund.

John Kerry is at the forefront of this organization.

They are involved in 50 countries currently around the globe to spread their filth and funding legal initiatives to promote sodomite-friendly legislation.

Their spreading to countries like France, Germany, Finland, Denmark, Chile, Croatia, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and many more.

The Royal Bank of Canada, which is the LARGEST Canadian bank in existence, is a part of the Global Equality Fund.

Back in Jeremiah 6, look at v. 19

Bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts.

–         That sounds a lot like Romans 1:21

–         but became vain in their imaginations

Look also one chapter later at Jeremiah 7:16

God’s Word says that we should not even pray for reprobates. That we shouldn’t make intercession for them, but to utterly reject them.

·       2 TIMOTHY CHAPTER 3:1-7

Sounds a lot like the list we read in Romans 1, doesn’t it?

·       2 Corinthians 13:5-6

More difficult passage.

1 Corinthians 5:1

“It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife.”

2 Cor 12:21

21 And lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and that I shall bewail many which have sinned already, and have not repented of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they have committed.

13/1 This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.

2 Corinthians 12:12

Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.

Compare Sodom to Nineveh (Genesis 18/19)

No preaching, no warning, no prophet was sentjust destruction.

No opportunity to repent.

They could not be saved!

They were only fit for destruction!

The men of Sodom wanted to know the angels. Whole city …

Jude 1:7 says:

Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

2 Peter 2:6-8, 10, 12-17

6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;

7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:

8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)

10 But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.

12 But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;

13 And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you;

14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:

15 Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;

16 But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man’s voice forbad the madness of the prophet.

17 These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.

And there’s a stern warning for America and the nations in all of this.

Let me leave you with Jeremiah 6:16-19

It’s like this was written exactly for us today … as it was written for Israel in Jeremiah’s day …
